Dalam buku-buku manajemen modern dikatakan bahwa jika kita ingin SUCCESS, maka kita HARUS menetapkan sasaran (GOAL). Kriteria penetapan sasaran yang baik menurut buku-buku teks manajemen modern adalah menggunakan akronim SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Actionable, Result-Oriented, and Time-Bound), sehingga dikenal sebagai SMART GOAL. Artinya: (1) Sasaran yang ditetapkan HARUS Specifik (Specific), (2) Sasaran yang ditetapkan itu HARUS dapat diukur (Measurable), (3) Sasaran yang ditetapkan itu HARUS dapat dicapai melalui rencana tindakan/action plan 5W-2H: What, Why, Where, When, Who, How, and How Much, (4) Sasaran yang ditetapkan itu HARUS berorientasi hasil/output/outcome, dan (5) Sasaran yang ditetapkan itu HARUS berbatas waktu (ada waktu pencapaiannya secara jelas).
Saya (Vincent Gaspersz) mengartikan kata SMART sebagai CERDAS dan mengubah SMART menjadi SMARTER yang berarti LEBIH CERDAS. Akronim SMART di atas ditambahkan dua huruf E dan R, di mana E = Empowernment yaitu memberdayakan orang lain, dan R = Reward and Recognition yaitu memberikan penghargaan dan pengakuan atas keberhasilan bersama itu. Dengan demikian SMARTER Goal akan melibatkan TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) untuk mencapai SUCCESS melalui memberikan penghargaan dan pengakuan atas keberhasilan TEAM ketika mencapai sasaran (GOAL) yang TELAH ditetapkan itu.
Selanjutnya SMARTER GOAL itu ditambahkan lagi huruf S = Spirituality, sehingga dalam hal ini pencapaian SUCCESS bersama TEAM itu melibatkan Tuhan sejak awal menetapkan sasaran (GOAL), sehingga menjadi SMARTERS GOAL.
Menurut McLeod (2014) hirarki kebutuhan manusia tertinggi dari Maslow yang diperbaiki adalah: Self-Trancendence yaitu membantu orang lain agar mencapai Aktualisasi Diri (Self-Actualization) juga seperti diri kita. Dengan demikian melalui menambahkan huruf S (Spirituality), maka di samping kita TELAH melibatkan Tuhan dalam penetapan sasaran (GOAL) juga TELAH berbuat kebaikan kepada orang lain (sesama manusia) sebagai perwujudan dari “Kasihilah Sesama Manusia Seperti Dirimu Sendiri” atau “Sebaik-baiknya Manusia, Adalah Manusia Yang Bermanfaat Bagi Sesama Manusia (Orang Lain)”.
Dengan demikian SMART GOAL dalam buku-buku teks manajemen modern TELAH berubah menjadi SMARTERS GOAL, yaitu sasaran (GOAL) harus ditetapkan menggunakan akronim SMARTERS, yaitu: (1) Specific, (2) Measurable, (3) Achievable/Actionable, (4) Result-Oriented, (5) Time-Bound, (6) Empowernment, (7) Reward and Recognition, and (8) Spirituality.
SMARTERS GOAL merupakan aplikasi dari IPTEKS (Ilmu Pengetahuan, Teknologi dan Seni) Plus IMTAQ (IMAN = Ikhlas Menjadikan Allah Nakhoda dan Taqwa yaitu Takut Kepada Tuhan melalui selalu mengikuti Firman-Nya agar ada KASIH: Kehendak Allah Selalu Isi Hati).
Catatan: HATI = Harmonisasi Antara Tindakan dan IMAN.
Empowerment hanya mungkin terjadi kalau kita mau berbagi dengan orang lain sekaligus menunjukkan tingkat kematangan emosional telah baik. Sedangkan Spirituality yang sesungguhnya (bukan asal bicara tetapi telah dipraktekkan) hanya mungkin dilakukan apabila tingkat kematangan intelektual dan emosional telah stabil pada level tinggi. Ini adalah kebutuhan manusia paling tinggi jika seseorang telah mencapai SUCCESS besar, maka ada keinginan membantu orang lain agar SUCCESS juga.

In modern management books, it is said that if we want to SUCCEED, then we MUST set GOAL. A good goal-setting criterion according to the modern management textbooks is to use the acronym of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Actionable, Result-Oriented, and Time-Bound); thus it is known as SMART GOAL. This means: (1) The goal that is set MUST be Specific, (2) That set goal MUST be Measurable, (3) That set goal MUST be achieved through an action plan of 5W-2H: What, Why, Where, when, who, How, and How Much, (4) That set goal MUST be result-/output-/outcome-oriented, and (5) That set goal MUST be timebound (there is clear time achievement).
I (Vincent Gaspersz) interpret the word SMART as INTELLIGENT and transform SMART into SMARTER that means MORE INTELLIGENT. The SMART acronym written above can be added two more letters E and R, where E = Empowerment, which is to empower other people, and R = Reward and Recognition, which is to give award and recognition for that success achieved together. Thus, SMARTER Goal will involve TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) to achieve SUCCESS through reward and recognition for the success of TEAM when reaching that GOAL that HAS been set.
Furthermore, that SMARTER GOAL can be added again with another letter of S = Spirituality, so in this case, that achievement of TEAM SUCCESS involves God from the beginning of setting the GOAL, thus making it into SMARTERS GOAL.
According to McLeod (2014), the highest hierarchy of human needs from Maslow that is regenerated is: Self-Trancendence, which is to help others to attain their Self Actualization as well as ourselves. Thus, by adding the letter S (Spirituality), then in addition that we HAVE involved God in goal setting (GOAL), we also HAVE done good to others (fellow human beings) as the embodiment of “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself” or “The Best Humans Are Humans Who Are Useful For Fellow Humans (Others)”.
Thus, SMART GOAL in modern management textbooks HAS turned into SMARTERS GOAL, which is GOAL that must be set using the acronym of SMARTERS, namely: (1) Specific, (2) Measurable, (3) Achievable/Actionable, (4) Result-Oriented, (5) Time-Bound, (6) Empowerment, (7) Reward and Recognition, and (8) Spirituality.
SMARTERS GOAL is the application of Science, Technology and Arts, Plus IMTAQ (IMAN = Ikhlas Menjadikan Allah Nakhoda FAITH = Sincerely Making God The Helmsman, and Taqwa, which is Fear God by always following His Word so that there is always KASIH: Kehendak Allah Selalu Isi Hati // LOVE: God’s Will Always Fulfills My Heart).
Note: HATI = Harmonisasi Antara Tindakan dan IMAN // HEART = Harmonization Between Action and FAITH.
Empowerment is only possible if we are willing to share with others as well as to show good emotional maturity level. Whereas real Spirituality (not merely talking, but has been practiced) is possible only if the levels of intellectual and emotional maturity have been stable at high level. This is the highest human need if someone has achieved great SUCCESS, then there is a desire to help other people to SUCCEED as well.
